I figured out a way to keep the original bridge AND get good intonation. This is a 1926 Stahl guitar which had solid bridge pins, a straight saddle, and therefore no compensation so really bad intonation. My fix to get the saddle back enough was to route very close to the bass E but turn that and probably the A and maybe D into slotted bridge pins - this allows me to move the string back at least the distance of the string thickness- it’s not much but it can be the difference between an audible
