PennDOT was the first in the nation to develop a Virtual Queue Protection system, which uses our existing changeable message signs to alert travelers of slow or stopped traffic ahead. Traffic changes are detected via real-time statewide traffic speed data collected from vehicle GPS and messages are automatically displayed to alert travelers before they reach the traffic.
